#MaritimeRealityCheck: Audience awareness important for progress in Decade of Ocean Science
On our series “Maritime Reality Check” Barrister Jean Chiazor Anishere, the Continental President of African Women in Maritime (WIMAfrica) advocates increased awareness among communities of people, so that they understand the need for actions towards healthy oceans and what they must begin to do.
She suggests that the Nigerian Institute of Oceanography and Marine Research (NIOMR) spearhead activities that would give like a road map on what Nigeria should be doing as maritime nations brace up toward the decade for ocean science beginning from January 2021.
NOTES:
- The idea of the ocean decade is as enshrined in the 2063 Agenda of the African Union to which Nigeria is a member of the African Union.
The Nigerian Institute of Oceanography and Marine Research has to create more awareness on all it is doing concerning studies of the ocean and how people can take responsibilities in that regard.
- Nigeria was not represented at a regional workshop organised in January 2020 in Nairobi Kenya, by the United Nations for this same oceans sustainable decade for Africa’s development and littoral states.
- Nigeria is a member of the World Aquaculture Society (WAS), but we have not been working with data to show what we have been able to do in terms of fish farming, in terms of unreported and unregulated fishing.
- It is disheartening when you are privileged to attend the conferences relating to ocean decade and your country is not represented.
