Shippers’ Council seeks suspension of demurrage for shippers over Apapa gridlock
The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has made known its plan to seek the suspension of demurrage accrued by shippers as a result of the perennial traffic gridlock along the port access roads in Lagos.
Executive Secretary of the Council, Mr. Hassan Bello, on Thursday said that “the terrible condition of the roads has made it impossible for shippers to clear goods from terminals within the 3 days allowed as well as return empty containers within 4 days.”
In a statement, Head of Public Relations at the Council, Rakiya Zubairu, said the Council observed that the condition of the roads had resulted in a standstill traffic around the ports thereby frustrating the ability of the shippers to perform their obligations.
It would be recalled that earlier in the week, Bello in company of some officers of the Federal Road Safety Commission, took an inspection tour of the Tin Can Island Port access roads to explore some suggestions by terminal operators for options that could ease the traffic situation for cargo transit.
