The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) now has an 11-member emergency response team in its Corporate Headquarters on Marina Lagos.
The team would offer immediate response in case of any emergency situation at the head office and indeed the port locations, a statement by the Corporate and Strategic Communication office disclosed on Thursday.
Managing Director of the NPA, Hadiza Bala Usman, appealed that members be prepared to work in real time regarding an emergency situation at the headquarters office always.
Represented by the Executive Director, Marine and Operations, NPA, Hon. Onari Brown, Ms Bala Usman said every Head of Departments is a constituent part of this emergency response team, with specific roles to play during an emergency.
She therefore asked that respective officers have a sense of responsibility to duty and ensure effective collaborations at such delicate periods.
She added that two teams shall be constituted at the port levels vis- a- vis Port Emergency Management Team (PEMT) and Port Emergency Response Team (PERT) and that details of their membership and mode of operations shall be duly communicated to all the port locations.
The committee is expected to among other things respond proactively during work place emergencies covering fire, explosion incidents, medical emergencies (like Ebola, Lassa fever, Covid-19 etc.).
Their response would also cover cases of public safety threat, armed robbery and terrorism threat, marine vessel collision in the port, accidental release of hazardous substances and natural disasters like flood or storm.
