Life At Sea: Captain Sunday Umoren reflects on mentoring seafarers
On Life At Sea today, Captain Sunday Umoren, the Director, Maritime Safety and Seafarer Standards and Certification at the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) talks on the importance of mentoring young seafarer.
He touches on the very essence of true friendship among seafarers, particularly while at sea –“Being together on uninterrupted voyage, you were all locked up together. You had your meals and assignments together. So, you just had to be friends with everybody.”
Umoren shares some experience on how much knowledge and experience he gained being fresh from school and going on board a ship. All thanks to Captain Maliki, who went an extra mile taking the cadets through practical drills on all they had learned and applied in their assigned duties all day long.
Capt. Umoren’s Top Three Keynotes to young seafarers include;
You must be humble
Be focused on your goal
Be abreast with new developments, as seafaring demands are dynamic
